Environmental stewardship is a priority of the Town of Churchill, this is accomplished with the help of our waste and recycling collection. We work hard to provide effective and efficient services that help manage waste in a way that takes into account environmental concerns as well as wildlife management. To do this, some of our waste and recycling solutions are unique. Transportation is often costly and we must ensure that recycling costs are taken into account. We cannot recycle some items which require costly transport such as cardboard, we also have bear-proof waste and recycling containers wherever possible, and we have more frequent waste collection than is usual in other urban situations.
In April 2024, we experienced a devasting fire at our Waste Transfer Facility ("L5"). This has resulted in a substantial shift in how the Town handles waste in our community. Most residents will not see a difference with curbside collection, but those who were regularly dropping off at L5 have experienced a major change.
All drop-offs for hazardous waste are on hold until suitable alternative storage can be arranged, this process will take time and we appreciate your patience.
Construction waste and clean wood drop-offs can be coordinated through Public Works by calling 204-675-2357 or emailing publicworks@churchill.ca
Curbside collection continues on it's regular schedule. With the support of our partners at Polar Bears International we have been able to place green bins throughout the community for household waste. If the bins near your home are full, please continue to place at the curbside. We continue to add bins in high use areas as they become available. To help maximize the space in the green bins, refrain from placing bulky items, cardboard and blue bag recyclables in the bins.
We encourage residents to recycle and repurpose items, if you have any item that is still good, consider the online Churchill swap and shop to help unused items find a new home.
We would like to thank the community for all your efforts to ensure that we have an efficient and effective waste management system.
