*OCTOBER 2024 UPDATE*
We would like to take a moment to thank all of our residents that have been doing an amazing job at removing recyclables from household waste. Thanks to your efforts we have been able to send over 700 bags (957.5 kgs) of blue bag recyclables from our community to Thompson Recycling in the last 6 months. Our pilot program partnership with their organization has been a great success, and we look forward to continuing to work with them.
Around 15% of bags collected end up rejected and moved to our regular household waste, the primary reasons for rejection are:
- Mixing food/beverage recyclables (cans, plastic, tetra packs) with paper/cardboard.
- Glass in the blue bags.
- Putting food waste or other household waste items in the blue bag.
Reminders:
- Ensure that only approved blue bag recyclable are being placed in blue bags (*Note - different recycling program lists differ slightly, so be sure to refer to the list provided by the Town).
- Paper and box board (cereal boxes, cardboard packaging) should be placed in a separate blue bag (or in a larger box).
- Corrugated cardboard must be broken down or flattened prior to pick-up, this ensures that we can collect all the cardboard as efficiently as possible! (*Tip - save a larger box as a collection box, breakdown smaller boxes and store them in the larger box until collection day, and then place the whole thing at the end of your driveway for pickup!)
- Glass must be kept separate from all other waste. Glass should be placed in a cardboard box (or other container, such as a pail), and marked as glass.
- Only place black bag/regular household waste in the green bins. Recyclables, cardboard, and glass should be placed at the end of your driveway or next to a green bin on Wednesdays before 1pm. Bulky cardboard fills up the bins quickly, leaving no room for black bag waste.
Paper copies of this notice will be in mailboxes this week and are also available at the Town Administration Services Office. Keep a copy on your fridge for easy reference!
With your help we can further reduce the volume of waste in our community!
